A drive to the right of center is ideal for this friendly opening hole. The generous opening for the approach into the most gently contoured green on the course should allow a chance for a good start. Swing smooth and easy to set a good tempo for the day.

A fairway wood or long iron is adequate off the tee. This short par 4 places a premium on accuracy. The longer the tee shot, the better the chance for a level lie. A long drive could reach the arroyo straightaway if conditions are right. Favor the left side of this very small green on your approach.

Drive to the generous landing area right of the fairway bunkers. If you don't go for it, the best second shot is a lay-up short of the left fairway bunker. The bail-out area to the right is no bargain and the large undulating green makes most birdie putts a challenge.

The largest in New Mexico, this green is 100 yards deep, so it requires good distance control to arrive on the correct level. There is 13 feet of elevation rise from the lowest to the highest point on this sprawling green. Two putts here should give you a well-earned par.

Long hitters drive it right center to reach in two. Shorter hitters stay left center off the tee. Set up the best angle of approach by placing the ball either short or right of the first fairway bunker on the left. Be sure to look back and take in the view as you finish.

Hit a fairway wood or iron off the tee to keep the bunkers out of play. Long hitters can go for it when the prevailing wind is behind them. Beware of the hollow to the right rear of the green. Be wise, any score between two and eight is possible here

Play it down the middle and avoid the rocky ravine and grass bunker that protect the inside of the dogleg. The green is open in front and receptive to a run-up shot. Beware of the deep hollow, right of the green, beyond the double tree.

Take at least one less club to allow for the drop in elevation. The big green slopes slightly away, but the large opening is receptive to a run-up shot. Avoid the deep bunker on the right.

Drive it to the center and avoid straying right to cut the corner...you can't do it. Be careful on the approach; favor the left side of this large green. Don't get suckered by a right back pin placement. A steady head helps here.
